Gregorio Quinn is a resident of Wappinger Falls in Dutchess County NY. Gregorio is a West Side Story baby; his dad was Irish and his mom Puerto Rican. Gregorio was raised in the Bronx and Manhattan. He grew up with his mom and brothers in a single parent household in the Castle Hill housing projects. He claims to be the first Eminem before there was an Eminem.
Gregorio attended Cardinal Spellman High School( a few years after Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor attended) until his junior year where he transferred to Julia Richman High School in Manhattan. He dropped out of high school much his mother’s and family’s dismay. But he is proud to state that he didn’t give up on his education and earned his GED diploma and went on to earn an Associate Degree from Manhattan Community College. Gregorio went on to earn his Bachelor of Arts from The City College of New York in 2001 at the age of 38 and a Master’s Degree in Social Work from Columbia University in 2005 at the age of 42.
Gregorio has overcome a checkered turbulent past while growing up in NYC. He had to deal with the passing of his young brother David when he was 14 and his older brother FDNY Paramedic Ricardo Quinn who perished on 9/11. With the struggle of these loses and his tumultuous upbringing and life, Greg was able use these challenging life events and experiences to help others. Prior to his obtaining his degree in social work, Greg was a soccer coach and player who would counsel players on improving their lives. He played at the ripe age of 35 for the National Soccer Team of Puerto Rico in the Caribbean Cup in Haiti.
Gregorio currently works as a high school social worker in the Bronx helping today’s youth achieve their potential. His work in an Afterschool Mentoring program of adolescent males of color enabled the school to receive a $250,000 grant from the Mayor as part of NYC’s Expanded Success Initiative program. He is a licensed social worker and drug counselor who has published scholarly articles concerning the issue of substance abuse and social work training. He also has given presentations at National and local conferences on topics such as Mentoring, Substance Abuse, and 12 Step programs. Gregorio is a member of the National Association of Social Workers.
Greg currently serves as the Co-chair and one of the founding members of the Latino Democrats of Dutchess County Committee, which recently ensured that election ballots, poll workers and related material were provided in Spanish for Spanish speaking county residents. Greg is also the Chair of the Town of Wappinger Democrats.
In 2013 Gregorio ran for the position of Councilman in the town of Wappinger (unfortunately he lost a close contest). He was elected a Trustee and is the new board President of the Grinnell Library District of the Town of Wappinger. He is also a union delegate for the United Federation of Teachers and a former Bronx Borough leader for some 500+ social workers & psychologists.
But Gregorio’s biggest achievement is marrying his lovely wife Norah in his Wappinger backyard and being the father of two lovely sons Rio and Malakai.
